Cedar Rapids, IA – HR Green, Inc. and its client, the City of Coralville, have received the 2011 Outstanding Civil Engineering Project Achievement Award from the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) Iowa Section. This prestigious award was conferred upon the First Avenue Corridor Recovery and Protection Project in Coralville. The award will be presented to representatives from HR Green and the City of Coralville at tonight’s annual ASCE banquet in Ames.
Funded by a record $27 million I-Jobs grant, the First Avenue Corridor Recovery and Protection Project is revitalizing portions of Coralville that were damaged by the catastrophic floods of 2008. The project also creates protective measures to safeguard the community from similar damage in the future. The project’s first phase is now complete. Phase 1 included: replacement of the First Avenue bridge over Clear Creek and its approach pavements; installation of removable floodwalls at the bridge site; construction of a stormwater pumping station adjacent to the bridge, in order to convey local runoff flows into Clear Creek when floodwalls are closed. The new First Avenue bridge is a showcase structure incorporating many aesthetic and pedestrian enhancements.
